What is REECCS?

The Ransom Everglades Energy and Climate Change Symposium is an annual event where students showcase their projects on climate change issues and solutions.  This event marks the end of a year long curriculum on climate science and scientific writing within 6th and 7th grade science classes.

This year marks our 4th annual REECCS event.  As the years have progressed, so have the projects expanding into other classrooms including social studies, computer programming, and performing arts.

What is in the Virtual Museums?

In total, we created 22 virtual museums housing "artifacts" from the projects below.

6th Grade:

ALL 164 sixth grade students have a dedicated "room" in their science class period’s museum featuring "artifacts" from both their Science and World Cultures projects. These include Integrated Science 1 projects from Dr. Kelly Jackson, Dr. Brooke Gintert, and Mr. Robin Escobedo and World Cultures/Geography projects from Mr. Cameron Ferguson, Ms. Alicia Fisher, Mr. Joe Mauro, and Mr. Rene Gonzalez. This year, research project topics were focused on SOLUTIONS to climate change based on the book/website Drawdown edited by Paul Hawken. Students investigated the science of their solution, the economics, and even proposed a bill!

From the Performing Arts Department, Ms. Cecilia Gonzalez's 6th grade drama classes created, constructed, and performed Trash Puppets prior to the transition to REmote School. The photos and videos are featured in their own dedicated museum.

7th Grade:

Students in Ms. Alexandra Gunner's and Ms. Bridgette Laskey's Integrated Science 2 classes contributed group projects to the virtual museums. Many of these projects also include an interdisciplinary component from Ms. Jan Bekkevold's Introduction to Programming classes. This year's 7th grade projects focused on outreach and climate education.

From the Performing Arts Department, Ms. Gina Montet's 7th grade drama classes contributed Environmental Monologues. Students wrote unique monologues and then performed/recorded them using visual imagery, drawings, or puppets. These works can be viewed in their own dedicated museums.

Upper School:

For the first time, Upper School students from the Marine Field Research class, taught by Dr. Kelly Jackson, Dr. Brooke Gintert, and Dr. Kristine Stump, also contributed to the RE Energy and Climate Change Symposium. Students contributed group research papers and project videos to a dedicated MFR museum.

Thank You!

REECCS 2020 would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the students and faculty, particularly during REmote School. Thank you to everyone who contributed and supported this year's REECCS!!! We would also like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Barbara Share and Ms. Meghan Kramer for supporting this project and always assisting our students with their research needs. Thank you for everything you and the RE Library has done this year to make this project a huge success!

We hope you enjoy viewing the virtual museums and please do not forget to sign the guestbook!

What we do...

Climate education.

Climate science is the cornerstone of the 6th grade science curriculum at Ransom Everglades School. Living in Miami, Florida, we are all already experiencing the effects and consequences of climate change. Our goal is for our students to have a solid understanding of the data and science of climate change and inspire them to make changes in their everyday lives to reduce their carbon footprint one pound of carbon dioxide at a time.

In addition to studying climate change in our curriculum, the RE Middle School is home to the RE Green Team, a group of eco-warriors that are trying to "green" our school and spread the word within our community. To find out what project students are working on, be sure to follow us on social media @sustainableransomeverglades
